What is VoIP? VoIP is an acronym representing Voice over Internet Protocol; It is linked to other IP technologies intended for voice applications like teleconferencing, telephony, and voice instant messaging.
In terms of cost for conversations lasting for hours, regular channels of communication will cost a fortune. The ever-expanding scenario of broadband internet connections has created many opportunities in VoIP and Internet Telephony. Government of Bangladesh has issued a warning to everyone using VoIP services in that country. The reason stated is the tremendous loss in government revenue to the tune of millions of dollars due to VoIP services offering free call services to Bangladesh.
An interesting anecdote in the history of ViOP of Bangladesh is the fining of Norway’s Telenor unit in Bangladesh to the tune of 24.5 million dollars by the Government of Bangladesh.
GrameenPhone based on the model of Noble Prize winning Grameen Bank of Bangladesh is controlled by 62% of shares by Norways’s Telenor. The Government version was: “They (GrameenPhone) used a new technology called (VoIP) to receive calls from abroad ….. busted these dozens of clandestine operations…”
The acceptance of GramenPhone to pay the above sum to the Government speaks volumes about the popularity of the VoIP services.
Against this backdrop, a welcome shift in the government’s stance has emerged by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission’s awarding licenses to six interconnection Exchange (ICX) and international gateway (IGW), which allows them to operate VoIP in the country.
